CANDIED ORANGES WITH DARK CHOCOLATE

You can pretend to be getting in your five a day with these sugary orange treats.  Almost like a very grown up chocolate orange these look great bagged up and given away as gifts.  Plus you can save any left over orange syrup for other recipes such as our orange drizzle cake!

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 375 ml water
  • 200 g sugar
  • 400 g dark chocolate

Instructions

  1. Wash off any wax from the oranges and slice into 3mm thick slices.
  2. In a wide saucepan add the water and sugar until the sugar dissolves.  Bring to a gentle boil but resist the urge to stir to stop the sugar from crystallising.
  3. Add the orange slices and leave to boil for 15 minutes on a lower the heat.  Flip the orange slices and boil for another 15 minutes or until the peel becomes translucent and the syrup has become thick.
  4. Transfer the oranges to a wire rack and allow to cool.
  5. Melt the dark chocolate in the microwave and dip the orange slices so half becomes covered in luscious chocolate.  Place back on a lined wired rack until the chocolate has hardened.  Enjoy!
